Apple is reportedly preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market next year, with mounting evidence suggesting a 2026 debut for its first foldable iPhone. The device has been in development for several years, and industry insiders say Apple is now deep into the final planning and production stages.
According to sources including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is opting for a book-style foldable similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup rather than a clamshell design. Early specifications point to a compact 5.5-inch external screen paired with a 7.8-inch inner display that unfolds into a tablet-like experience. Apple is reportedly focused on minimizing screen creases by using a reinforced metal layer to distribute bending stress — an approach designed to improve durability and display quality.
The chassis is expected to feature titanium, with a strengthened hinge system potentially incorporating liquid-metal components to enhance longevity and smooth folding. Camera rumors suggest a premium setup with dual 48-megapixel rear sensors and multiple selfie cameras, including one that may sit beneath the inner display for a seamless look.
In a shift from recent iPhones, Apple may bring back Touch ID via a side-mounted sensor to conserve space, while powering the device with its in-house C2 cellular modem. The foldable is also expected to rely solely on eSIM and support mmWave in select markets.
